'Dear Zoo' word bank
Activity Description
As part of a literacy lesson, the pupils used ICT to complete sentences on the screen.
The class had been reading the book 'Dear Zoo' by Rod Campbell. The teacher showed the pupils an on-screen text activity based on sentences in the book. The teacher demonstrated how the mouse could be used to make selections from a word bank. The pupils were shown how words could be moved around the screen and located to complete a set of sentences.
Some pupils were encouraged to revisit the book for support in completing the task. Others used the book to check their answers on completion of the task.
The teacher demonstrated how items could be 'dragged to the dustbin' if changes needed to be made.
In pairs, the pupils took turns to complete the task.
Activity Objectives
To use an ICT word bank to complete sentences on screen.
To use the mouse to make simple choices and to reorganise items on the screen.
To understand that a computer allows the user to make choices about outcomes.
Commentary
In this example, Ahmed has used the mouse to make appropriate selections from a menu of key words. Having selected a word, he has moved it to the appropriate place to complete a sentence.
He has checked results, using the book for support. Where necessary, he has made changes by using the 'dustbin' to remove items.
This example illustrates aspects of work at level 1. Ahmed demonstrates familiarity with using the mouse to make choices about outcomes when presenting work.
To make further progress, Ahmed might be given opportunities to use a word bank and a word processor to create and amend his own sentences.
