Graphic model of a house
Activity Description
The pupils used ICT to create a graphic representation of a house by dragging and dropping various motifs of household items into their correct rooms.
The teacher loaded graphics software onto the computer and selected an activity based on the theme of houses and homes.
The teacher demonstrated the use of the mouse to a group of pupils, showing them how to select and place furniture in different rooms. As she demonstrated the techniques, the teacher talked about some of the reasons for her choices.
The pupils took turns to create their pictures. As they worked, the teacher intervened, asking open-ended questions and encouraging the pupils to give reasons for their choices.
Activity Objectives
To create a simple representation of a house using motifs in a graphics package.
To use the mouse to select and place objects on the screen.
To understand that a computer allows the user to make choices about outcomes.
Commentary
Adam has created a picture of a house using ICT. He has selected, moved and placed pictures of furniture into rooms on a background scene. He has organised the furniture into groups, for example the kitchen furniture is grouped into one room, while bathroom furniture is placed in another. Adam has used ICT to explore a variety of outcomes.
As he worked, Adam gave appropriate reasons for his choices to the teaching assistant.
This example illustrates aspects of work at level 1. Adam demonstrates familiarity with using the mouse to select and manipulate images on the screen. He uses ICT to explore and produce different outcomes when creating the model of the house. He talked about his use of ICT to select and organise items.
To make further progress Adam might be given the opportunity to browse, select and combine pictures and text within an ICT package.
