Festivals and celebrations

Activity Description

The pupils produced a multimedia presentation as part of a project about festivals and celebrations.

They collected information from a variety of sources, including books, photographs and interviews. A number of pupils produced sketches. The teacher showed the class how to scan and save images on the computer. The class examined a CD-ROM and identified a number of features unique to electronic texts, including the use of icons for navigation and the use of hyperlinked text to trigger sound files.

The teacher taught the pupils to use the main features of an authoring package and combine images and text onto a template produced by the teacher. Each pupil designed a single page.

Having produced a first draft, the pupils considered their texts and identified any specialist words that might be unfamiliar to a general readership. The teacher taught them how to use a sound sampler and how to incorporate sound files onto their page.

The pupils then modified their work. They identified key words, amended the font colour and incorporated short spoken explanations within hyperlinked text.

The teacher combined individual pages to produce a class multimedia presentation.

Activity Objectives

To use an authoring program to organise, refine and present a multimedia page, incorporating images, sounds and text.

To examine conventions of electronic texts, including the use of hyperlinked text, sound files and navigational icons.

To amend information to match the needs of an audience.

Commentary

In this example, Hannah has collected information from a number of different sources. She has combined a scanned image, text and sound files to create a page in a multimedia presentation.

Hannah has identified specialist vocabulary within the text. She has used ICT to record spoken explanations and incorporated the sound files on the page to create hyperlinked text. For example, when the word 'mehendi' is clicked it triggers the commentary 'Mehendi is a dye made from henna, lemon and honey. It is applied with a stick.' This indicates an awareness of the needs of a general audience.

Hannah has worked within a navigational framework provided by the teacher.

This example illustrates aspects of work at level 4. Hannah is able to combine and refine different forms of information from a variety of sources. She presents information in different forms and, in producing the hyperlinked text, shows an awareness of the needs of the intended audience.

To make further progress, Hannah could go on to analyse and apply a variety of navigational conventions in an overall multimedia presentation.
