Gymnastic activities: pair work

Activity Description

The teacher gave the pupils a pathway to follow using floor and apparatus and asked them to choose ways of travelling using skills they had learnt. They had to incorporate ways of turning or rotating in their sequence and have a clear starting and finishing position.

The pupils are working towards completing core task 2 of gymnastic activities unit 15 from the QCA/DCSF scheme of work. In the next lesson, they will adapt their sequences to use a different pathway and to include four twisted shapes.

Activity Objectives

To develop the range of actions included in a performance.

To perform skills and actions more accurately and consistently.

To create a gymnastic sequence that meets a set of conditions.

Commentary

The pupils show a high level of technical ability, performing more advanced gymnastic agilities such as the cartwheel and straddle forward roll with accuracy and control. The degree of difficulty of these skills and actions and the pupils' ability to link and perform them with precision, control and fluency suggest characteristics of level 4 work. The pupils use tension and extension well and link the sequences accurately with coordination and control. However, they need to develop their understanding of composition and include more variations in speed. Their selection and application of skills shows characteristics of level 3 work.
